NAPCC to have ninth component on clean and green technologies

Chennai:
The National Action Plan on Climate Change to reduce green house gases will have an additional component that will focus on cleaner and greener technologies, which includes advanced ultra super critical thermal plant.

Dr R Chidambaram, principal scientific adviser to Union government told reporters here on Monday on the sidelines of Confederation of Indian Industry  Conference on ‘Automotive R&D Trends 2015’ that the ninth mission of NAPCC will also include Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) and capturing and storing of carbon-dioxide.

The eight missions under NAPCC include National Solar Mission, National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency, National Mission on Sustainable Habitat, National Water Mission, National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem, National Mission for a Green India, National Mission fro Sustainable Agriculture and National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change.

The ninth mission will also include Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) and capturing and storing of carbondioxide.

He said that in Advanced Ultra Super Critical (USC) thermal plant, power generation efficiency could be improved by increasing the steam temperature to 700.
Since, the heat-resistant steel that is used as the material for the steam turbine and boiler cannot withstand 700 or higher steam heat, memorandum of understanding is on with Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, which has expertise in materials research, Bharat Heavy Eletctricals Limited and National Thermal Power Corporation to develop the boiler.

“First we will do the research and development and test it out in a loop and after the research and deveplopment is over, we are looking for 800 MW plant which will be built by National Thermal Power corporation,” said Chidambaram.
